Presented by State Opera South Australia, the G&S Fest is a celebration of Gilbert & Sullivan, or “G&S” as they are universally known, creators of British comedy-opera in the 19th century. Over two weekends in May 2023, State Opera will bring together some of the best bits of very British humour and song in an action-packed programme.

The pair gave rise to a great British tradition of political satire and their work shaped the development of musical theatre, political discourse, literature, film, and advertising.

State Opera’s G&S Fest is the only festival of its kind outside the UK and aims to deliver a memorable entertainment experience for aficionados and first timers alike.

The G&S Fest took place across several venues in Adelaide/Kaurna Yerta on 11-21 May 2023.

Along with our main stage musical productions of Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore and Trial by Jury, you can also attend a quiz night, a high tea, a long lunch, film viewings and even a Big Sing!

You should arrive at your venue no later than 15 minutes before the performance starts. If you wish to purchase beverages or snacks or require accessibility assistance, we recommend you arrive earlier to avoid any last-minute rush.

Please note that for events at Her Majesty’s Theatre, auditorium doors will close once the performance starts and you will only be admitted once there is a suitable break in the performance.

Most venues have a variety of food and drink options available for purchase. Alternatively, there are many cafes, bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinities ideal for pre-or post-show meals and drinks.

There are no age restrictions for any of our shows, in fact G&S is perfect for the kids!

There is no set dress code for any of the events in the G&S Fest. However, there’s nothing stopping you from putting on your glad rags or coming in fancy dress!

e-Tickets are available for all events and will be sent to your mobile or email once you have finalised your purchase.

A limited number of tickets may be available on the door for some of our events, however we highly recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.

State Opera does not offer travel packages as part of our ticketing. However, we work with interstate tour groups and we are happy to refer you to them if you’d like to get in touch.
